Hope Station

Each week, Dan Dickinson and his son volunteer with Hope Station Community Services, a Salem-based organization committed to reducing food insecurity and strengthening local families through compassion and service. As part of the Hope Station food recovery team, Dan and his son dedicate 2–3 hours weekly to transporting rescued food from local grocery stores back to the organization’s warehouse for distribution.

Together, they help collect and deliver roughly 1,000 pounds of food—ensuring that fresh, usable items don’t go to waste and instead reach families in need. This hands-on role supports Hope Station’s mission to serve the Salem community with dignity, consistency, and care. For Dan, it’s not only a chance to give back, but a meaningful way to model community service and shared responsibility for his son.

Getting involved with Hope Station is simple and deeply rewarding. Volunteers are needed Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as well as on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays (until 7:00 p.m.) and Saturdays of each month. Whether you're stocking food, helping with warehouse tasks, or assisting with deliveries, there's a role for everyone. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least two hours per session. To get started, visit hopestationcsi.org, review the Volunteer Guidelines, and fill out a Volunteer Application. Applications can be mailed or dropped off in person at 1337 Madison St. NE, Ste. 115, Salem, OR 97301. Join the team and help provide food, hope, and dignity to families across Salem.
